Jump to the steps

3.4.1 Turn on browser notifications

Turn notifications on in Settings , then Notifications , under Browser notifications. Do it on each phone or computer you want alerts on.

  1. On an iPhone, add Cake to your Home Screen first, then open Cake from its icon. In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Cake shows these steps on an iPhone or iPad, in place of the button, until you do.

  2. Open Settings , then Notifications . Under Browser notifications, press Turn on browser notifications.

  3. Your browser asks for permission. Allow it.

  4. The line under the button reads On for this device.

Note: Home may show a card, Hear when a client needs you, with a Turn on notifications button. You can turn them on from there too.

3.4.2 If they don't turn on

  • Your browser blocked them: The screen says browser notifications are blocked, and Cake won't ask again. Allow notifications for cake.ink in your browser's site settings.
  • You closed the prompt without choosing: Cake remembers. The button now reads Try browser notifications again.
  • They expired: The screen says Browser notifications expired on this browser. Press Turn browser notifications on again.
  • Your browser can't get them: The screen says This browser can't receive Cake notifications. Your email alerts still work.

3.4.3 Pick what reaches you

Settings , then Notifications has three kinds of alert you can set. For each, tick Browser, Email or both. All of them start ticked. The Browser boxes stay greyed out until this device has notifications on. Each tick saves as you make it.

  • Requests and replies: A new request, or a client's reply.
  • Money needing you: A client reports a deposit, a payment needs attention, or a client picks a time and no deposit is reported yet.
  • Booking updates: A session is confirmed.
  • Bounced emails: An email Cake couldn't get to a client. This one is always on, by email and on this device.

3.4.4 What a notification says

  • New request: A new project is waiting for you.
  • Client reply: A client replied.
  • Deposit needs your check: A client tapped I sent the deposit. Check your account before you confirm.
  • Payment needs attention: A client paid, and the time didn't lock.
  • Check the reported payment: A card deposit arrived on a request that had an unconfirmed payment-app report.
  • Session confirmed: A session was confirmed. You don't get one when you confirm a session yourself, or record consent in person.
  • A client picked a time: A client picked a time and hasn't reported a deposit yet. The title names the time they picked.
  • An email bounced: A client never got a message. Get the right address.

One alert comes by email only: a client asking for new times.

3.4.5 Test your email alerts

  1. In Settings , then Notifications , find Email alerts.

  2. Press Send a test alert. Cake emails "Test alert from Cake" from no-reply@cake.ink to your sign-in address.

  3. If it lands anywhere but your inbox, move it there.

Note: There's no test button for browser notifications. Send a test alert tests your email, not your phone. You can send 3 an hour and 10 a day.
